Iceland - new destination for Croatian players

Iceland is growing up as basketball nation. Their national team finaly took their place on last two Eurobasket tournament and despite they lost all 10 games, basketball became more popular on this island on the north of Atlantic ocean.

As one thing leads to another, therefore investments in basketball teams grew in Iceland in last few years, both in Dominos League and Division 1. And for next season there are currently nine Croatian players on rosters in Iceland, most players behind domestic and Americans.

And those nine guys would be very good addition to any Croatian Premijer Liga side, they would even make solid results in domestic competition, led by new coach of Division 1 team Snaefell Vladimir Ivanković, but they all decided to continue their careers on this beautiful island.

Damir Mijić would fight battles under the rim with other big guys in Division 1, as he would wear Thor AK Akureyri jersey next season. He played for Croatian Prva Liga side Agrodalm last season, finishing season on 3rd place. 200 cm tall Mijić was second in scoring in the competition with 19,3 points per game.

Rookie from Sacred Heart University Mario Matasović signed with Dominos League side Njardvik. He is 202 cm tall Power Forward who averaged 11,5 points and 6,4 rebounds per game in his Senior year.

His teammate would be Julian Rajić, former member of Hermes Analitica, for whom he played both in first and second division of Croatian basketball. Julian is 206 cm tall Center and last season he averaged 12,6 points and 5,4 rebounds per game on 55% shooting.

Hamar strenghten themselves on Forward position with adding Marko Milekić, 201 cm tall 23 year old player from Pula, where he played last season for team Istrauni, averaging 18,9 points and 12,3 rebounds per game, which made him top rebounder and 3rd in scoring in entire league

After having solid season on another European island - Ireland, Dino Knezović moved north to Iceland. This 198 cm tall Forward is new member of Sindri, member of Division 1.

Small Forward Matej Buovac will continue his career in Skallargrimur, where he would compete in Dominos League. Last season he played for Zagreb and got relegated from Premijer Liga, but Matej had solid individual season with 10,7 points and 3,7 rebounds per game.

Experienced Swingman Dino Stipčić is coming to Iceland from another Premijer Liga side Škrljevo. He played there last three seasons, but in last one he averaged solid all-round numbers - 9,5 points, 5,5 rebounds, 4,5 assists and 1,3 steals. In new season he would play Dominos League for KR. They will attack their sixth league title in a row this season!

28 years old with great experience, Dino Butorac, is new member of U.M.F. Tindastoll where he came from German ProB side Rostock. This 191 cm tall Shooting Guard also played in many Croatian teams, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sweden, Hungary and Great Britain.

Nick Tomsick is American player of Croatian origin and in last two seasons he spent season and half in Croatian Premijer Liga, first for Zabok and last for Vrijednosnice Osijek. He is 185 cm tall Point Guard and he averaged 10,3 points and 2,6 assists per game, while shooting 46% for 3 last few months in Osijek. In new season he will play for Thot Thorl, winner of Icelandic Supercup last two seasons.

FIBA U16 European Championship: Croatia won the title, Roko Prkačin MVP

Great amount of talent was collected in Serbian city Novi Sad last eight days and good basketball was played during the competition.

Croatia won the title with 71:70 victory against Spain. It was dramatical finish with Roko Prkačin tremendous dunk for Croatian 69:67 lead 21 seconds before the final horn. Spain returned with three pointer made by Hector Alderete 6,4 seconds left on the clock. After Croatia's time-out Prkačin recieved the ball on low post and scored layup for final 71:70. There was 2,8 seconds left for Spain to win, but Kennedy Clement missed the jumper and Croatian celebration started!

Boris Tišma was Croatian top scorer with Prkačin ended the game with 24 points, while Prkačin added 18 with 10 rebounds. Both of them were selected in Starting Five of the tournament and Prkačin also won the MVP award, averaging 18,6 points, 10,9 rebounds, 3,7 assists and 2,0 blocks per game, while shooting 52% from the floor.

Alderete with 17 points and Usman Garuba with 14 points and 18 rebounds were Spanish best players in the final match, but also on the entire tournament, both winning the place in Starting Five.

This was Croatian 4th gold on U16 European Championship, after celebrations in 1995, 2010 and 2011.

Turkey dominated 3rd place match against France, winning the game with 82:59. Alperen Sengun was Turkey's best player during the competition, leading the team in points (14,4 per game), rebounds (9,2 per game), steals (1,6) and blocks (1,4), which gave him place in Starting Five of the tournament.

Host nation Serbia won 5th place with 81:68 win over Greece, while Lithuania beaten Latvia 82:61 to win 7th place.

Puerto Rico won CAC games, good talents seen during the competition

Central American and Caribbean were held last week in Colombian city Barranquilla and Puerto Rico national team won the competition in basketball.
Puerto Rico dominated the competition, winning all five games by average 10,8 points difference. Host nation Colombia won Silver medal, while Bronze is going to Cuba.

Experienced Colombian shooting guard Michaell Jackson was best player of the entire competition, with 18,5 points, 9,5 rebounds and 2,3 steals per game. But, we will keep our focus on young prospects, born 1997 or younger, that left good mark in Barranquilla.

We will begin with Colombian point guard, 178 cm tall Hansel Atencia. He was his nation's top scorer with 19,3 points per game, adding 2,5 rebounds, 2,8 steals and 0,8 assists, while shooting fantastic 42% for three. Atencia attended The Master's College last two years and is currently entering his Senior year. He already played for Colombia at FIBA AmeiCup and World Cup Qualifiers.

Jahmiah Simmons is forward from Division 1 college North Texas and he is playing for US Virgin Islands. During CAC games Simmons averaged 16,7 points and 7,0 rebounds, but his team lost all three games. On the other hand, he played solid minutes at better competition FIBA AmeriCup in 2017, where his team won 4th place.

Another forward on this list is Cuban Yoanki Mensia, last season member of Argentinian Liga A side Gimnasia Indalo. Mensia played all 4 games at Barranquilla, where he averaged 6,2 points and 6,0 rebounds. He also played for Cuba national team at World Cup Qualifiers.


Amir Nesbitt was youngest player at CAC games. This 2001 born guard averaged pretty solid 9,0 points, 4,3 rebounds and 1,0 steal per game for US Virgin Islands.

Only center on this list is Bahamas 2000 born, 203 cm tall prospect Samuel Hunter. He played limited minutes, only 9,3 per game and showed some fine attacking mode, averaging 4,8 points per game, while grabbing 1,5 rebounds.
